Resumen:
Acquiring stress patterns in an L2 can be very easy in some cases or extremely difficult in some others, depending on the type of interaction between two (or more) phonological systems. Why is it that for Spanish speakers some English patterns are more difficult than others? How does stress affect intelligibility and international communication? Does perception correlate with production of stress? Is lexical stress teachable? Can it be taught explicitly or implicitly? Does it help us decide on more productive courses of action in the classroom? In this talk, special emphasis will be given to the notions of interphonology and intelligibility, particularly in relation to lexical stress and its interplay with segments.
