Resumen:
Chalarostylis is a deep sea genus close to Hemilamprops but easily distinguished from the latter by its robust first pereopod. However, this is not always a useful character as this appendage is frequently broken off at the basis-ischium joint. In the absence of the first pereopod, the species of Chalarostylis can be separated from those of Hemilamprops by their also unusual first maxilliped. This appendage has a short basis and a 45˚diagonal merus/carpus articulation, two unequivocal characters whose generic value is recognized for the first time. The first pereopod is not sexually dimorphic, therefore it doesn?t seem to be involved with courtship behaviour. Besides, the setae of the dactylus are simple, and thus are not expected to act as a filter either. In addition, at least one of the species of this genus, Chalarostylis elegans, has strong spine-like teeth on the propodus and carpus, an armature that may be used to grab small prey. In the present contribution, Hemilamprops brenkei Mühlenhardt-Siegel, 2005 is transferred to the genus Chalarostylis and partially redescribed. This species formerly known from the Angola Basin at 5389 m depth is now reported from the Weddell Sea, and the Argentine and Brazilian Basins between 2082 and 5131 m depth. Finally, the diagnosis of the genus Chalarostylis is emended.
