Resumen:
Estrogenicchemicalsareoftendetectedintheaquaticenvironmentandcannegativelyaffectanimaldevelopment andreproduction.Inteleost fishes, thehormonalregulationduringacriticalperiodoflarvaldevelopmenthasastronginfluence ongonadalsexdifferentiation;thusthisprocessmaybeaf-fected bytheexposuretoenvironmentalestrogens.Inthisstudy,we first assessedthelethalacutetoxicityofthenaturalestrogen17β-estradiol(E2) andtheweakerestrogenmimics4-tert-octylphenol(OP) and4-nonylphenol(NP)onlarvalstagesoftheSouthAmericancichlid fish Cichlasomadimerus. Inafurther experiment,weanalyzedtheeffectsofchronicwaterborneexposuretoE2 and OPongonaddevelopment andsexdifferentiation.ExposuretohighconcentrationsofE2 had apronouncedfeminizingeffect directingsexdifferentiationtowardsovariandevelopment,whiletestisdevelopmentwasinhibitedat alower,environmentallyrelevantconcentration.AmongOP-exposed fish, 15?38.5% ofthemalesex-hibited testicularoocytes(TOs),acommonlyreportedbiomarkerofestrogenicexposure.However,sinceTOs werealsorecordedincontrolmalesandtheproportionofmaleswithTOswasnotsignificantlyhigher inOPtreatments,theiroccurrencecouldnotbeattributedtoOPexposure.Inaddition,TOsdidnotseem toimpairmalegonaddevelopmentandfunctionalitysincenormalspermatogenesiswasobservedin testesofOP-treated fish. TheseresultsindicatethatE2 occurring intheSouthAmericanaquaticen-vironment mayaffectmalereproductivedevelopmentandposeariskforwild C. dimerus, especiallyunder prolongedexposure,whiletheeffectsofweakerxenoestrogenssuchasOPwouldbenegligibleforgonad developmentinthisspecies.Asillustratedbythisstudy,thenaturaloccurrenceofTOsindicatesthat conclusionsconcerningthecausesofthisphenomenonmustbedrawnwithcare.
