Resumen:
Thelife story strategies of some ray groups make them ideal candidatesfor investigate biogeographic patterns by its distribution. Possiblythe most informative of these groups are the skates. The skates havevery highspecies diversity; skates have an extreme non-migratory life mode andare exclusively bottom dwelling fishes at any age, beginning fromeggs with fibrillar filaments for attachment to the bottom. Thecosmopolitan distribution of the group is accounted for by its largeage. Mostskate species live in the shelf and upper slope up to 1000 m ofdepth, which does not allow them to move across deeper marineregions. Theyare most diverse at higher latitudes and are replaced in warmtemperate to tropical waters by stingrays (Myliobatoidei). The lateCretaceous/Early Tertiary Weddellian Zogeographic Province was anarea of shelf habitat encompassing part of Australasia, tip ofSouthamerica and the Antarctic Craton as a bridge.Theopening of the Drake Passage in the Oligocene period, enabled thecold waters of the Pacific Ocean to penetrate in the south Atlantic,causing drastic effects on the thermophilic fauna of the Province.Perhaps here we can find an explanation to the dispersing of thegenera in the Trygonorrhinidae Family; to the disjunctivedistribution of Sympterygiaskate species, to the remarkable endemism in Australasia andSouthamerica, and to the intrusion of the Zearajaspecies in the South-West Atlantic.p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; direction: ltr; color: rgb(0, 0, 10); line-height: 120%; text-align: left; }p.western { font-family: "Liberation Serif", serif; font-size: 12pt; }p.cjk { font-family: "Noto Sans CJK SC Regular"; font-size: 12pt; }p.ctl { font-family: "FreeSans"; font-size: 12pt; }a:link { color: rgb(0, 0, 255); }
