This short article analyses three stages of this debate: the first seeks to explain why part of the population could not get a job in the industrial and modern services sectors; the second aspect is related to the effects of the capitalist restructuring and the spread of outsourcing; the third stage deals with the contemporary discussion of the effect of technological transformations on employment relationships. The overall objective of the analysis presented in this text is to provide some insights on the first two issues, which are crucial to the understanding of the specific characteristics that the ongoing transformations may have on Latin American labour markets.
