Around the middle of the twentieth century, some controversy about the genetic fallacy arouse. This paper intends to analyse and reconstruct such a controversy in order to throw light on some difficulties regarding the use of fallacies in philosophical dialogues. Moreover, it is argued that a suitable analysis of it must appeal to the concept of strategic maneuvering. To conclude, some remarks are made regarding the way in which such maneuvering could be derailed.
