Resumen:
This paper explores a case of self-retranslation involving two prominent figures of the literary and translation fields in Latin America and the United States: Puerto Rican writer Rosario Ferré (1938-2016) and US American translator Gregory Rabassa (1922-2016). Originally published in Spanish in 1972, ?La muñeca menor? is one of Ferré?s best-known and frequently anthologized stories. Rabassa?s initial translation of the story, published as ?The Youngest Doll? in The Kenyon Review in 1980, was soon to be overshadowed by the second version of the text. Motivated by the urge to restore some nuances of meaning and sound in the source text, which were missing in Rabassa?s otherwise good translation (Ferré in Castillo García 2005), Ferré undertook the self-retranslation of the story, which was first published in 1986 in Femenist Studies, also as ?The Youngest Doll?. For this self-retranslation, which has been regarded as rather conservative (Gosser Esquilin 1999), Ferré worked in collaboration with Diana Vélez, an editor and translator of Aunt Lute. A Multicultural Women?s Press. This paper has three goals: (1) to analyze the extent to which Ferré?s retranslation actually makes for a new version of her story or is, rather, a revision of Rabassa?s work. That is, does Ferré?s retranslation actually evidence competing interpretations of the source text (Venuti 2003)?; (2) to examine and compare the sociocultural re-inscription of the source text in both versions by identifying the factors which have enabled this second English version of the story (Dean-Cox 2014) in order to analyze how each of these versions relates to specific literary and translation fields; (3), to assess the incidence of self-translation in the retranslation process carried out in collaboration, and, also, in its outcome. In other words, what part had the author and translator in the negotiation of the interplay between the Spanish and English versions?
