This paper aims to distinguish between the type of poetic construction which seems to exist in Prop. III 18 and in Verg. Aen. VI 854 ss.: i.e., poetic construction in terms of device, in the first case, and poetic construction in terms of interpretation, in the second case. The paper is divided into three parts. The analysis of each text results in a comment on the poetic construction of history that both poets produced; the last part deals with poetry and history and tries to frame the vision about poetic construction of history in a broader discussion on the representation of history in order to point out some specific values of the representation of history in poetry.
