Resumen:
The Uspallata valley is situated on the central-western part of Argentina, in the Andes Range. The objective of this research was to develop a conceptual model of groundwater origin and flow pattern to support sustainable groundwater management in the near future. The use of hydrochemical and stable isotope techniques was of paramount relevance, as they allowed discriminating the different source areas for groundwater in the aquifer and their relative contributions. They also enabled estimating the contribution of the Uspallata River to the Uspallata aquifer and to the Mendoza River, main irrigation source for the Cuyo region agricultural oasis, improving the quality of the last. The work was carried out in the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency project ARG/7/008.
