Resumen:
Water is one of the main factors that regulate plant growth. Therefore, periods of water deficit generate stress influencing plant development, physiology and biochemistry, with potential impacts on seedlings mortality and reproductive success. These considerations are linked to climate change scenarios with increasing levels and extremes of temperature and drought events. We will submit Araucaria araucana seedlings to controlled conditions of water stress. This tree shows great ecological plasticity, growing from relatively dry to very humid places in North Patagonia. Plant responses mechanisms to different levels of drought stress will be studied under experiment designs including three randomized blocks with two repetitions (N = 30) for each treatment: control, moderate-long drought and severe-short drought. Air temperature and humidity, and soil humidity will be measured in 3 plants per replication per treatment. There will be considered morphological responses, such as growth, specific leaf area, biomass production and root-shoot ratio. Also there will be considered anatomical-histological responses, such as annual xylem development, wood density, tracheid anatomy, leaf structure, thick cuticle and mesophyll, stomata density and size. The plant response to different types of drought condition will indicate resistance level to water deficit at the juvenile stage of Araucaria a. These results will be discussed.
