Resumen:
The objective of this work is to review the different methods used to forecast Zonda wind, enphasizing the recent advances and main challenges to be overcome in understanding this wind dynamics. The current methods to forecast Zonda wind have been applied only to the most densely populated areas of Mendoza and San Juan provinces. Until very recently the prediction of zonda wind has been done by using probabilistic tools such as stepwise discrimant analisys, based on the surface meteorological variables values at synoptic scales. In the last 10 years, high resolution numerical models are being used to simulate and forecast Zonda wind at high resolution (grid-spacing less than 4 km) to identify the main mechanism in the onset stage of the warm and dry downward winds. The main highlight of this review is that the statistical methods have a resonable perfomance in forecasting Zonda wind, but the location of the ?jet stream? exit region at 250 hPa is one of the main feature that determines the position of the descending motion near the surface.
