Resumen:
Significant progress has been made in the development of ring-width chronologies for tropical-subtropical dry forests of South America in recent years. These records have allowed the identification of vegetation response to climate, and the development of reconstructions from local and regional climate and hydrological changes in the subtropics. The subtropical dry forest regions are characterized by a marked seasonality in rainfall and the presence of numerous tree species poorly studied from the standpoint of dendrochronology. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a dendrochronological integration of the advances in the subtropical forests of the Yungas and Chaco (Argentina) and Cerrado (Bolivia), including the exploration of woody species recently used in dendrochronological studies (e.g. Schinopsis lorentzii, Centrolobium michrochaete), and the responses of woody subtropical species to climate variations at local and regional levels in different phytogeographic regions. The development of ring-width records in different regions of the subtropics opens new opportunities to characterize past changes of continental-scale climate forcings such as SAMS, which performance is closely related to variations in food production in one of the most important agricultural region of South America. The exploration and detailed study of the ring-width chronologies allow the detection and reconstruction of largescale climate variations, and the implementation of sustainable forest management in these subtropical regions.
