Resumen:
South America plays a very important role in the search for an understanding of past climate variations. This continent is the only landmass in the Southern Hemisphere that extends from the tropics through the mid-latitude Westerlies to the subantarctic domains at ~55˚S. Stretching over a N-S transect of 65° latitude, paleoclimate archives in South America offer the unique opportunity to study the interlinked low- and high-latitude processes influencing climate in the Southern Hemisphere. In addition, the latitudinal continuity of the lands allows a detailed study of tropical-extratropical interactions across the continent. The potential for long proxy climate records also extends the analysis of teleconnections beyond the short record provided by instrumental data sets. In this context, the multi-proxy records archived in the Long-Term Climate Reconstruction and Dynamics of South America (LOTRED-SA) PAGES working group database are presented and discussed in terms of the criteria for PAGES 2K phase II.
