Resumen:
Xanthene dyes are extensively used for applications in biomedicine, as well as in materials science, due to their fairly good quantum yields and high photostability. Xanthenes are also recognized for their applications in dye based lasers. Hence, a process to modulate their fluorescence quantum yields is highly desirable. Altering the fluorescence quantum yield of a fluorophore by introducing various substituents at different positions on the parent chromophore is well known. In this study, we present a novel approach to modulating the fluorescence properties of a xanthene based fluorophore without affecting the primary dye skeleton. For this purpose, different GUMBOS (g roup of u niform m aterials b ased on o rganic s alts) based on an anionic xanthene skeleton were synthesized and their spectral properties were established. It was observed that the fluorescence quantum yield can be greatly modified by varying the associated counterion of the chromophore of interest.
