Resumen:
Vertebrate Paleontology in Argentina, particularly regarding mammals, has greatly developed since the late XIX century, and has provided us with a fairly complete view of Cenozoic faunal evolution in southern South America. However, in this context, research on fossil mammals, as well as palynologic, sedimentologic, and stratigraphic studies of mammal-bearing beds are still lacking in central-west Argentina, particularly in Mendoza Province, and would contribute to a better understanding of the Cenozoic biodiversity of Argentina, in a region strongly influenced by the Andean orogeny. These studies on fossil mammals from Mendoza have nearly got stuck during the last decades of the XX century, probably due to difficulties both in accessibility and surveying in some areas and also the lack of local specialists. However, the paleontological significance of Mendoza is clearly demonstrated by the definition of two different mammal ages (Divisaderan and Huayquerian) of the biostratigraphic sequence of the South American Cenozoic. During last years, the settlement of specialists in the province is reversing the previous situation, favoring the development of these researches.
