Resumen:
The metropolization of many of the Latin American cities finds its origins in the growing expansion of the urban area in the main city and the consequent emergence of different types of urbanizations on the edges of the city. The metropolitan territory thus emerges as a highly heterogeneous space with diffuse borders. Since most attention has been focused on mega-cities of the region, there is an evident need for comparative studies of medium-sized metropolises, which take into account the great endogenous potential of population redistribution and the expansion of its area as a result of the residential mobility that these cities have. Hence, this article analyzed the metropolitan expansion of six selected middle-size metropolitan cities of Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, based on the estimation of the patterns and flows of recent intra-metropolitan migration according to data from the 2010 censuses. It is expected that the results may provide empirical evidence on the role of intra-metropolitan migrations in the urban restructuring processes of metropolitan spaces and in the change in the demographic composition of the areas of origin and destination of these migratory flows.
