Resumen:
The aim of this study is to analyze trends in mortality from external causes in older people (60 years and over) in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico between 2001 and 2014.Mortality rates from external causes (per 100,000 population) among adults aged 60 years and over were calculated for each country and gender, adjusted for age by the direct method, using the World Health Organization?s standard population. To explore trends in age-standardized injury death rates, we use log-linear joinpoint regression models. Joinpoint analyses are performed using the Joinpoint Regression Program v. 4.0.4 of the US National Cancer Institute. This paper observed a decrease in external causes in most Latin American countries studied (except in deaths from other accidents in both Brazilian men and women, and from transport accidents in Brazilian men). Future research will have to study external causes of death in the elderly, with other indicators necessary to monitor the problem of violence in this group
