Prevalence of alcohol and others substances consumption in college students

Introduction: alcohol and others substances young's consumption is a public health problem throughout the world. Aim: study the prevalence of alcohol and others substances consumption and its associated problems college students. Method: 286 university students (85% women) from 18 to 25 years old (M= 20,8 ±2,3). Previous verbal informed consent, the following questionnaires were administered: socio-demographic data, alcohol consumption and other substances, and AUDIT. Results: For both men and women beer was the first most consumed drink (41% y 32%) followed by fernet (21,4% y 25,4). 10% of men and 13% of women reported being alcohol-naïve. Average of grams of consumed alcohol per occasion was 78,3 (±58.30) for men y 54,7 (±44,36) for women. This difference was statistically significant (p < ,01). For both the first and second most consumed drink the mode of consumption frequency was ?once a month or minus? (27% y 38%) for women and ?2 or 3 days per month? (31% y 29%) for men. 41% of participants presented heavy episodic drinking (HED) and 61% of participants reported binge drinking (BD) in the latest two months with majority frequency of ?once a month? (33%). Moreover, participants reported 1 to 7 drunkenness episodes per month with a mean of 2.03 (±1.43). On the other hand, 59,8% consumed tobacco once, 46,7% marijuana, 13,4% LSD, 10,3% psychotropic, 6,7% cocaine, and 5,7% ecstasy. The mean of first consume age was: 15,26 (±1,93) tobacco, 17,41 (±2,14) marijuana, 18,70 (±1,76) LSD, 18,44 (±2,29) psychotropic, 18,24 (±2,08) cocaine, and 19,47 (±2,20) ecstasy. Latest month consume was: 33,5% tobacco, 21,8% marijuana, 2,5% LSD, 3,6% psychotropic, 1,4% cocaine, and 0,7% ecstasy. ANOVAs for AUDIT scores by HED and BD were statistically significants.
