Resumen:
To improve efficiency in internal combustion engines, by reducing the alternating mass of components such as pistons, high specific strength alloys capable of withstanding dynamic loads at elevated temperatures are required. In the scope of this work an Al-13.5Mg-7Si-2Cu (w%) alloy was studied, which was provided by RSP Technology BV and produced by means of melt spinning, cutting, compaction and hot extrusion. To improve efficiency in internal combustion engines, by reducing the alternating mass of components such as pistons, high specific strength alloys capable of withstanding dynamic loads at elevated temperatures are required. In the scope of this work an Al-13.5Mg-7Si-2Cu (w%) alloy was studied, which was provided by RSP Technology BV and produced by means of melt spinning, cutting, compaction and hot extrusion.Pistons need to be light because they oscillate thousands of times per minute and need to be stiff to avoid changing shape under strongly alternating loads. If a piston deforms then it can scrape against the cylinder wall, causing energy losses and drastically reducing motor lifetime
