Resumen:
A review of the results reported in the open literature by the authors and by other researchers about the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcement in biodegradable polymers will be presented. In particular, the discussion will be focused on those biodegradable polymers most widely used in industry: starch, poly(lactic) acid, PLA, and poly(vinyl acetate), PVA. A comparative analysis of these materials with traditional polymers will be performed. Different processing techniques for the preparation of CNTs as well as for the nanocomposites obtained will be commented. In the case of the nanotubes, several functionalization methods (both covalent and non-covalent ones) and the variables involved in these methods will be presented. The advantages and disadvantages of them will also establish. In the case of the nanocomposites, different processing techniques such as extrusion, electrospinning and film casting will be comparatively analyzed. In addition, the rheological, mechanical and transport properties of the nanocomposites will be reported. The relationship among processing, morphology and properties will be discussed. In particular, the fracture and failure mechanisms operative in nanocomposites based on biodegradable polymers reinforced with carbon nanotubes will be mentioned. Different existing and potential approaches to investigate those mechanisms will be analyzed. Finally, a discussion about future trends in the development and characterization of these nanocomposites will be presented.
