Resumen:
In the 1950´s, and with greater emphasis since 1970, has been detected in large part of Argentina and especially in the vast Chaco plain a "positive climate jump". This has had a major impact on natural and man-made ecosystems. The changes associated with the new demands of international markets for food, enabled the launching of new agricultural activities, especially soybean crops, which advanced displacing other crops and primarily to natural forest. The aim of this paper is to analyze the changes in land use under the observed climate jump in the Dry Chaco of Argentina in the last decades. Using data from the official network of meteorological stations show the long-term variations in precipitation and temperature in the Dry Chaco region of Argentina, that covers part of the provinces of Salta, Formosa, Chaco, Tucuman and Santiago del Estero, in northern Argentina. We are also considering changes in land use with data coming from the national agricultural census. The results show that the climate jump in the Dry Chaco is associated with an important advance of the agriculture, including oilseeds and grains, which together increased by almost 442,000 hectares the area under cultivation between 1988 and 2002. In return, the deforested area was almost 910,000 hectares.
