Resumen:
The peopling of South America is a subject thathas been discussed from many angles, including timing, migration routes, genetics, etc and at various scales of analysis. In this paper we take on a supra-regionalscale of analysis and examine stone tool assemblages from a series ofPleistocene/Holocene transition and Early-Middle Holocene sites located in twodesert areas on the eastern side? of theAndes?Patagonia and the high Puna. Our objective is to assess how theseassemblages match up to the expectations of an exploration and colonizationmodel proposed for Patagonia. This comparison allows us to examine how this colonizationprocess might have varied in these two similar but yet different regions of theSouthern Cone, and to offer explanations about how the exploration andcolonization strategies used by early hunter-gatherers in desert environments variedin relation to their knowledge of the resource structure and the distributionof resources.
