This paper starts with a critical revision of traditional concepts used in the study of grinding practice, and the frameworks within they were brought in and applied. The second part introduces contemporary approaches to the study of the relationships of grinding with subsistence, food processing, mobility, settlement organization and occupational history as well as the social organization of grinding activities and its technological and functional concerns. Finally, a case study from Northwestern Argentina is presented.
