ABSTRACTThe concept of region is an essential concept in the history of geography and between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century it contributed to the unity of our science. However, focused on this concept, geography became an ideographic science. Richard Hartshorne and Alfred Hettner, among others, tried to give the regional geography a theoretical framework, but the analytical developments of Geographical Neopositivism finally replaced the concept of region by a broader one: spatial typologies or areal classifications. Today, spatial typologies are a fundamental chapter of spatial analysis, making use of powerful geostatistical tools. and the modern geotechnologiesKey Words: History of Geography, Region, Neopositivism, Spatial tipologies, Areal classesRESUMENEl concepto de región es un concepto esencial en la historia de la geografía y entre fines del siglo XIX y comienzos del siglo XX contribuyó a la unidad de nuestra ciencia. Sin embargo, centrada en este concepto, la geografía se transformó en una ciencia ideográfica. Richard Hartshorne y Alfred Hettner, entre otros, intentaron darle a la geografía regional un marco teórico, pero los desarrollos analíticos del Neopositivismo Geográfico finalmente reemplazaron el concepto de región por otro mucho más amplio: las tipologías espaciales o clasificaciones areales. Hoy, éstas últimas constituyen un capítulo fundamental del análisis espacial, haciendo uso de poderosas herramientas geoestadísticas y de las modernas geotecnologías.
