This paper reviews some aspects and topics of the new history of ancient Israel by Christian Frevel, *Geschichte Israel* (Stuttgart: Kohlhammer, 2016) within the context of the recent debates in the historiography of "ancient Israel" and the prospects for a history of ancient Palestine/southern Levant in which to find such an "ancient Israel".
