Resumen:
Myth and Ritual in Hittite Religion: From Theory to Practice For this session of the workshop I take Mario Liverani?s quotation as a point of departure: ?laziness is common among historians. When they find a continuous account of events for a certain period in an ?ancient? source, one that is not necessarily contemporaneous with the events, they readily adopt it. They limit their work to paraphrasing the source, or, if needed, to rationalization. No one would recommend such a procedure on a theoretical level, but nonetheless it continues to be used, especially in fields where awareness of the methodology and aims of history is not great.? (2004: 28). Liverani pushes us to open up the debate on the work of interpreting written sources, in our case, Hittite texts. We will particularly focus on myths and rituals. For such purpose, I will summarize the main features of Hittite religion as well as studies of myth and ritual in other fields of research.
