Resumen:
The southern part of the Deseado Massif has numerous large and small lakes that occupy depressions in the volcanic rocks. Most of these lakes are seasonal today but shore ridges a few to several meters above present water levels, some of which are continuous through two or more depressions, suggest these lakes were higher in the past, that many were joined to form larger water bodies, and that some lakes may have persisted all year. One of the main purposes of our research is to understand the relationship between human occupation and water availability in this area, where human occupation has been dated between the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and the late Holocene. Here we present the results of recent archaeological and paleoenvironmental research. Evidence of human occupation has been obtained from several rock shelter sites. Past environmental conditions have been constructed by examining sediments in these rock shelters and also in nearby lagoons and associated beach ridges. Pollen grains preserved in the silt/clay-rich lagoon deposits and silty-sand rock shelter deposits have provided important information on past vegetation. Chronologies for human occupation and paleoenvironmental changes were constructed using AMS radiocarbon and OSL dating methods.
