South American historical archaeology has recently had a unique impact in shaping a worldwide definition of the discipline. In order to understand these circumstances, it becomes necessary to analyze the trajectories of historical archaeology in the region. This paper discusses the socio-historical contexts of the creation and consolidation of historical archaeology in South America. Furthermore, it offers an overview of its wide academic production, taking into account the most outstanding investigations regarding colonial archaeology and archaeology of capitalism.
