Resumen:
A critical view from history and political anthropology allows for a revision the concept of oriental despotism, as it has been attached to the socio-political organization of Middle Eastern societies, referring to ancient times and modern as well. Thus, this critical view enables a deconstruction of the myth of oriental despotism, placing it within its historical context and finding its origin in Western elaborations, especially modern Europe’s liberal political philosophy. Also, a critical perspective from the political anthropology of the Middle East is proposed, dealing with patronage bondings and patrimonial structures, in order to understand the socio-political order of traditional Middle Eastern societies.
