Which is the optimal measure for the uncertainty in the measurement or preparation of two incompatible physical observables? We discuss different possibilities given in the literature, analyzing their limitations and applications to observables with discrete or continuous spectra, bounded or not, when the operators are complementary between each other or for general cases. We present new quantifiers of the joint uncertainty based on generalized information-theory entropies. In particular we deal with the case of two-dimensional operators, giving a universal lower bound for the measure of uncertainty proposed as well as the states that saturate the uncertainty relation.
