Resumen:
Discovery of new bioactive compounds from natural sources has played a major part in recent development of organic chemistry. Increasing attention has been devoted to the ecological role of these allelochemicals/natural products. This book explains, in a simple language proper for beginners, major features of methodology currently applied in allelochemicals/natural products research.  In the first section, the book provides protocols for collection, handling and storage of soil, water, air and plant samples as well as criteria of sample preparation needed for chromatographic procedures. The second section is devoted to physical and chemical techniques applied for separation and structural elucidation of natural products/allelochemicals, from simple preliminar easy-to-perform colorimetric reactions to the high-complex NMR analysis. The third section provides protocols to assay bioactivity of natural products on plants, insects, fungi and bacteria from whole organism to cell function and molecular level. Written by experts, this is a “do it yourself book” and presents an integrative perspective comprising the ecological, chemical and biological aspects of natural products/allelochemicals research. Therefore, this book will be welcome by researchers and students of biology, chemistry and related disciplines interested on isolation, identification and characterization of natural products
