Languages, Peoples, and the Pilcomayo river in the South American Gran Chaco

In this talk we analyze the distribution of verbal encoding strategies among languages spoken by hunter-gatherer peoples in the Pilcomayo River region of the South American Gran Chaco. Combining linguistic, ethno-historical, and environmental evidence, we examine correlations between the morphological pattern of person verbal indexes and inter-tribal social relations, and their relationship to the traditional trekking ranges of these peoples.
