Resumen:
The present research addresses three questions concerning the southern Inka economy.First, how well did the organization of administrative and economic spaces coincide? Were Inka provinces essentially self-sufficient, or did economic supply regions cross-cut administrative regions?Second, to what degree were state activities sustained by an independent state economy, as was the ideal model for the Inkas? That is, were distinct kinds of state activities sustained through different networks and divergent rationales? And third, what role did the region's subject peoples play in determining the character of the ceramic assemblages used at state facilities? With current information, we cannot fully resolve these questions, but the evidence from the present study helps to advance our understanding. We approach these problems by using neutron activation analysis (NAA) to examine the production and distribution of ceramics used in state activities. The chemical analyses and initial data analyses were conducted at the University of Missouri Research Reactor Center (MURR), under the direction of Michael Glascock and Hector Neff. Subsequent data analysis conducted at the Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute (MCI), supervised by Jeffrey Speakman. We thank them for their professional direction and warm reception.
