The Farallón Negro Volcanic Complex
Is interpreted to be localized by the gradual southward migration of the flat‐slab
zone of the central Andes during Miocene to recent times. This resulted from the oblique subduction of the Juan Fernandez Ridge,
creating a largely non-volcanic segment of the Andes With isolated partly mineralized
igneous complexes displaced inland (Isaaks et al., 1982; Jordan et al., 1983; Kay
et al., 1999).

The Farallón Negro Volcanic Complex
is embedded in the Sierras Pampeanas, which extend to the South and West from the
PunaAltiplano high plateau of the Central Andes and are characterized by high mountain
ranges (up to 5500 m.a.s.l.) and intervening intramontane basins at a typical elevation
of 2000-3000 m.
