Resumen:
Permafrost in the Andes of Argentina ? a significant hydrological resourceChristian Halla, Jan Blöthe, Dario Trombotto Liaudat, Lothar SchrottThe high semi-arid Central Andes of Argentina are characterised by a widespread occurrence of permafrost and a large vertical extension of periglacial forms and processes. Particularly large rock glacier complexes with ice rich permafrost can be considered as an important water resource in the dry regions of the Andes. The Argentinian government approved in 2010 a law to protect glaciers and the periglacial environment. This studyaims to show the regional distribution of rock glaciers and to quantify the ice content of these periglacial landforms. Degradation of permafrost is much slower than melting of glaciers.
