Resumen:
A satisfactory configuration of instruments was achieved by means of a rigorous analysis of the relationships among the state variables, which were defined through the equations that model process behaviour. The design comprises two main stages called observability and redundancy analysis. The complete procedure involves making engineering-level decisions concerning theaddition or removal of sensors at various points. This complex task was carried out efficiently with the help of a decision-support system (DSS) that orients the user. The concepts of Computer-Aided Design were applied to help the engineers choose the most convenient measurements. In this work we present the first stages of the re-engineering of a DSS for process-plant instrumentation design. Next, Modgen`s design, architecture, and functionality are revised. It is explained how to deal with complex software that results from a chaotic generation by the constant incorporation of new tools. The purpose of this work was to turn an existing DSS into a robust trustworthy user- and developer-friendly system.
