Resumen:
Composites based on high density polyethylene (HDPE) and thermoplastic corn starch (TPS) with an enological mineral clay (bentonite-BN) were obtained. HDPE-BN and TPS-BN composites were processed by melt-mixing during 15 min at 160 °C and 40 rpm; and at 140 °C and 50 rpm, respectively. HDPE and TPS composites fracture surfaces resulted homogenous, showing a good particle distribution within both matrices. For HDPE/BN5, it was detected a poor adhesion of mineral particles with synthetic polymer by SEM. Besides, no particle intercalation by the HDPE matrix was detected in XRD spectra. These results were reflected in the ductility reduction of HDPE films by mineral addition, according to the results of tensile tests. On the other hand, a good mineral-matrix adhesion and particle intercalation by starch matrix were detected in TPS/BN5. TPS matrix reinforcement was evidenced by the increase of resistance and rigidity of these materials by BN incorporation.
