Resumen:
The direct reaction of unmodified tung oil and styrene initiated by boron trifluoride diethyl etherate allowed obtaining thermoset polymers with valuable properties like shape memory behavior for some of their compositions. On the other hand, magnetite nanoparticles (Mg-NP) were synthesized by the method of alkaline coprecipitation and after that, they were coated with oleic acid in order to hydrophobize their surfaces and make them more compatible with the polymeric matrix. Subsequently, they were incorporated in a tung oil/styrene copolymer with the objective of improving/changing its properties and eventually produce activation of the shape memory effect by application of an alternate magnetic field. In this way, superparamagnetic polymer nanocomposites were obtained by adding oleic acid coated Mg-NP to the copolymer with a composition of 50 wt.% of tung oil (TO) and 50 wt.% of styrene (St) obtained by cationic polymerization. Glass transition temperature and storage modulus of the copolymer as well as magnetic behavior were significantly affected by the incorporation of 1 wt.% of magnetite nanoparticles.
