Resumen:
The solvents aging of glass/epoxy composite pipes used for oil transport
was investigated. Different aging conditions were selected in order to simulate
in-service environments trying to obtain reliable results from accelerated
laboratory tests. Several sets of samples were aged under different conditions
before testing: 20 ºC
and 80 ºC
in water, 20 ºC
in benzene, 20 ºC
in isopropanol and 20 ºC
in h-hexane. A set of unaged specimens was characterized as a reference.
Samples for subsequent mechanical characterization were directly cut from the
pipes in the longitudinal direction. Flexural properties (strength and
modulus), impact strength and interlaminar shear strength were measured for the
material after aging at different conditions. It was observed that aging in benzene,
h-hexane and isopropanol at 20
ºC did not affect the material mechanical behavior and these
solvents reversibly diffused in the material. On the other hand, degradation
promoted by hot water in the matrix and the interphase was irreversible and
highly detrimental to the mechanical properties. This irreversible damage was
also confirmed by SEM observations.
