Resumen:
Gelatin films cross-linked with 1.4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDGE) were produced by casting under optimized reaction conditions. The effects of gelatin and BDDGE concentration, pH, temperature and time were studied by following the consumption of amino groups and differential scanning calorimetry. Films obtained under optimized conditions were evaluated in terms of moisture resistance, color, opacity and solubility. It was determined that curing rate was greatly increased with temperature but at temperature of 90 °C obtained films resulted significantly more opaque than those produced at 50 or 70°C. The effect of gelatin concentration in the film-forming solution was evaluated and it was found that at least 10 wt.% was required to obtain freestanding films. The optimal plasticizer concentration was fixed at 30 wt.% in order to avoid phase segregation that should imply a loss of film flexibility.
