Resumen:
Kyllinga vaginata Lam. a native species of Paraguay, whichis popularly known as ?kapiikati?, is marketed by Spanishhebalists known as ?yuyeras?. K. vaginata Lam. has manypharmacologic effects such as diuretic, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, also used for the treatment of fungal diseaseslike leucorrhea. Its secondary metabolites are useful arrayof natural products with remarkable biological activities inmedicinal components, food additives therapies, aromatic, and culinary purposes. In the current research phytochemicalexperiments revealed that the presence of several naturalproducts in the rhizome of K. vaginata (ethanol crude extract),such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds and lipids. With theevidence of traditional anti-leucorrhea uses, the present studyalso investigated to explore hidden alternative antifungalactivity of K. vaginata. As a result of this translational approach, microorganism inhibition growth tests were performed onthese crude EtOH extracts and revealed antifungal activityagainst Fusarium graminearum, a phytopathogen of wheat.Useful identification features are cited for a fast/economicquality control of the rhizome of K. vaginata, the presenceof secondary metabolites are declared and main chemicalfamilies of biologically active compounds are proposed forthe first time for K. vaginata. Finally antioxidant activity ofthese roots were studied and the inhibitory activity against F.graminearum, proposed by this translational approach.
