Resumen:
The genus Arachis (Leguminosae) is native to South America, has 81 formally recognized species clasificated in nine taxonomic sections. Chromosome numbers are currently known for 69 species, most of them are diploid with x = 10, (2n = 20), a few (4 spp.) are diploid with x = 9 (2n = 18), and the rest (5 spp.) are tetraploid with x = 10. Classical and molecular cytogenetic techniques was used in order to describe the chromosome number of some Arachis species. For first time was described the chromosomic number of nine species belonging to 5 different sections of the genus .All species reviewed species showed 2n=20, with small chromosomes metacentric and submetacentric, which agrees with the previous cytogenetic descriptions of Arachis
