Municipal Solid Waste Iincineration (MSWI) is being intensively developed throughout the world. However, there is a great concern with respect to the fate of heavy metals (HM) contained in MSW and their environmental impact. In this study, a local CFD model was developed for MSWI in a fluidized bed. The model represents the HM vaporization from a combusting MSW particle, for bed temperatures ranging between 923 and 1073 K. This new approach uses FLUENT 14 as the modeling platform for the simulations along with a complete set of self developed user-defined functions (UDFs). A kinetic rate law for the Pb release, derived from the CFD thermal analysis of the burning particle, is proposed. The simulation results are compared to the experimental data obtained in a lab-scale fluid bed incinerator reported by Falcoz et al. (2009). The comparison shows that the proposed CFD particulate model represents well the evolution of the HM release for the considered range of bed temperature, showing that bed temperature has a strong influence on the HM vaporization dynamics.
