Resumen:
Understanding thelinks between biodiversity-friendly landscapes and human wellbeing iskey for supporting policy agendas from local to global scales. UnitedNations Sustainable Development Goals propose full employment (SDG 8)and crop diversity (SDG 2), but it is unclear if there are trade-offsbetween these goals across rural landscapes worldwide. We tested thisidea with agricultural and socio-economic data for 44 countries fromall continents during a 15-year period (1999?2013). We show thatcountries where crop diversity increased also supported moreagricultural jobs. Such effects were independent of differences amongcountries in the size of the agricultural sector or fertilizer use (aproxy for the investment in external inputs and technologyincorporation). Greater crop diversity was also compatible withimproved crop yields and was not confounded with changes insocio-economic development or economic growth. In general, we foundno evidence that the jobs lost in the rural areas were incorporatedinto other sectors of the economy. Unemployment is a major concernaffecting livelihoods all over the world; policies to enhance cropdiversity and prevent the loss of associated agricultural jobs areurgently needed.p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 120%; }
