Resumen:
An experimental study on the photo-Fenton degradation of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in water is presented. Different sources of iron were studied: sulphate, oxalate and citrate. Their optical properties and effects on the behavior of the system under different operating conditions of pH and temperature were evaluated. For the ferric sulphate system (pH=5, T=25 and 35°C), the 2,4-D complete conversion and mineralization of the sample was not observed after 180 min of reaction. However, the 2,4-D was totally removed after 45 min (pH=5, T=35ºC) for oxalate and citrate ferric systems. The photonic and quantum efficiencies for both herbicide degradation and mineralization were also computed. For operating conditions of pH=5 and T=35ºC, the degradation photonic efficiency for the ferric sulphate system was 6 times lower than that obtained using ferric citrate. However, at pH=5, values of the quantum efficiency of mineralization close to 50% for citrate and oxalate complexes were determined.
