Resumen:
Failure or malfunction of a power transformer could produce serious disturbances and collateral damages in the Electric Power System in which the unit operates. The probability of failure of an aged transformer increases when the unit becomes overloaded. A solution to unload aged units is to expand the transformation capacity of the substation, i.e., by installing a new transformer in parallel. Another investment option is to replace the old unit by a larger one. However, power transformers are capitalintensive assets, and then investments in new units must be suitably planned. Tools that allow assessing the optimal investment plan on this concern are required. In this context, calculating the thermal aging of the insulating paper is a key indicator to establish residual life of a unit. This information allows defining the type of investments, and when they must be scheduled. This paper is founded on a method to determinate the current thermal age of a transformer, which was previously developed by the authors, to then, compute the probable date of the end of the transformer reliable life, by using an Artificial Neural Network for forecasting the future load demand. Finally, by using the Net Present Value Method, an economic analysis is developed, in order to compare two different investment options. The proposed methodology is applied in a real case study. Results are presented and discussed, and conclusions are given.
