Resumen:
The archaeological heritage of South America is as diverse as the nature of the states that comprise its countries. The laws that protect this heritage are intrinsically related to the recognition and importance that has been given to pre-Columbian identity used to build the South American nations. In turn, this pre-Columbian identity has been associated with the recognition of indigenous peoples and their heritage within each country. The conceptualization of cultural heritage and the laws that protect it was born in the formation of South American nations during the 19th Century. However, it is since the 20th Century, where the particular archaeological wealth of the region has been a matter of concern for the states regarding the need to protect and safeguard it.
