Cytotoxic screening activity of secondary lichen metabolites

Five depsides and nine depsidones were studied for their cytotoxic activity. Both groups ofspecific phenolic lichen metabolites were tested in cell culture of lymphocytes to which tritiated tymidinewas agregated, using colchicine as standard. A conciderable cytotoxic effect was observed for ali the compounds,being pannarin, l '-chloropannarin and sphaerophorin superior to colchicine. lt is proposed thatthe molecular structures in volved and the possibility of establishing hydrogen bonds by the substituents onthe aromatic rings, might be responsible for the different biological activities observed
