Structure-Gastric Cytoprotective Activity Relationship of SesquiterpeneLactones and Structurally Related Compounds". In the present papera structure-activity relationshipin the gastric cytoprotective effect of several sesquiterpene lactones and structurallyrelated compounds is reported. On the basis of our results it was possible to determinethe minimal structural requirements to produce the biological response; in addition,new compounds showing cytoprotective effect in other series were found. On the otherhand we evaluate a possible molecular mechanism for these compounds.The discriminatingproperties discussed can Chus become the basis for structure-reactivity correlations in thesecompounds with respect to a nucleophilic addition. Such discriminant reactivity criteriathat is anchored in the properties of the molecules should provide useful tools for predictingthe ability of untested compounds in this series to exhibit similar cytoprotective effect.
