Resumen:
3a-Hydroxycarvotagenone and its epimer 3¡3-hydroxycarvotagenone were isolated as a minor mixture and itsstructure determined by spectral means . The mixture was then usedin cytoprotection experimente . The mixture, in spite of possessinga Michael acceptor, did not show cytoprotective activity . The lackof activity was attributed to the preeence of a -OH group next tothe ¡3-carbon of the Michael acceptor. Thie -OH group could reactin a intramolecular way yielding an epoxide which would producethe inhibition of the Michael acceptor . In order to confirm thie, the mixture wae acety lated and the mixture of aceta tes u sed inour cytoprotection experimente . The mixture of acetatee showed amoderate but significant cytoprotection probing the existence ofsorne kind of stereoelectronic interaction between the acceptor andthe nucleophile .
